Callum Marshall

Loan Watch | Marshall off the mark in League One

Across the Football League and National League, there were six young Hammers who saw action over the Bank Holiday weekend.

After a goal and an assist in his full debut for Huddersfield Town in their EFL Cup first round victory over Morecambe, Callum Marshall continued his fine form for the Terriers. Making his first League One start, the 19-year-old striker once again proved to be the difference-maker. In a tightly contested game, he consistently found dangerous positions in the box, with his persistence paying off when he expertly controlled a cross from Brodie Spencer before rifling a left-footed shot past the ‘keeper from a tight angle. Saturday's 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury sent the Yorkshire side to the top of the League One table.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, George Earthy was called upon once more as a late substitute in Bristol City’s 1-1 draw with Coventry City.

Gideon Kodua’s return to Wycombe Wanderers saw him introduced ten minutes from time in their 2-0 win over Rotherham United, marking the club’s first league victory of the season.

In League Two, Patrick Kelly was instrumental in Doncaster Rovers’ 1-0 triumph over Morecambe, a result that pushes them into the Play-Off spots. The 19-year-old almost found himself on the scoresheet shortly after the break, but his dangerous effort was deflected just wide.

Defender Levi Laing completed the full 90 minutes for Cheltenham Town for the third time this season as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wimbledon.

In the National League South, Mason Terry stood tall for Hornchurch, making a number of crucial saves to secure a clean sheet in a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Welling United.

Elsewhere, Krisztián Hegyi watched from the bench as Motherwell secured a 3-1 victory over Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, while Michael Forbes was not featured in the Bristol Rovers squad that was defeated 2-0 by League One leaders Stockport County.

With another weekend of valuable experience under their belts, plenty of West Ham’s young loanees will be eager for more minutes as the Football League gears up for the second round of the EFL Cup in midweek.
