Loan Watch | Kodua fires Wycombe back into automatic promotion places

Two West Ham United Academy loanees were in midweek action for their respective clubs....

Gideon Kodua played a decisive role for Wycombe Wanderers, scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Rotherham United in EFL League One. Following a narrow home defeat against promotion rivals Wrexham at the weekend, Tuesday night's result sees the Chairboys move back into the automatic play-off places as they chase their second-ever season in the Championship.

Rotherham took the lead through Louie Sibley in the 66th minute, but Richard Kone, signed from Essex Senior League side Athletic Newham in January 2024, equalised soon after with his 21st goal of the season.

The hosts thought they had regained the advantage when Johnson Clarke-Harris found the net, only for his effort to be ruled out for a handball offence in the build-up. A frantic stoppage-time period ensued, as Sonny Bradley headed Wycombe in front before substitute Kodua sealed the win with a composed finish from inside the box, set up by Kone.

Clarke-Harris pulled one back from the penalty spot for Rotherham in the dying moments, but Wycombe held on to move ahead of Wrexham and into second place on goal difference.

Meanwhile, in the Vanarama National League, Regan Clayton was rested for Dagenham & Redbridge’s trip to Halifax Town after playing 90 minutes just three days prior. He remained on the bench as the Daggers ended a long wait for a league win, securing their first victory since New Year’s Day to move two points clear of the relegation zone.

At Colchester United's JobServe Community Stadium, Mason Terry’s Hornchurch suffered heartbreak in the BBC Essex Senior Cup final, losing to Canvey Island on penalties. The Urchins had taken the lead just before half-time with a stunning 30-yard strike from Charlee Adams, only for Bradley Sach to equalise with the last kick of the game. With no extra time, the contest went straight to penalties, where Canvey won 4-2.
