Four young West Ham United prospects were in action for their loan clubs at the weekend.
Nathan Trott’s Vejle BK were denied a first point on their return to the Danish Superliga by reigning champions FC Copenhagen.
Goalkeeper Trott helped Vejle to win promotion last season but after being edged out 1-0 at Aarhus in their season opener, De Røde were beaten by the odd goal in five at home to Copenhagen.
Vejle twice came from behind to go into half-time level at 2-2, with Raúl Albentosa’s header and a Denis Vavro own-goal cancelling out strikes from Jordan Larsson and Roony Bardghji, only for Trott to be beaten by Diogo Gonçalves’ second-half penalty (pictured, below).
Defeat left Vejle second from bottom of the 12-team Superliga table, sandwiched between West Ham’s recent UEFA Europa Conference League opponents Viborg FF and Silkeborg IF.
Sticking with goalkeepers, Krisztián Hegyi made his second pre-season appearance for Stevenage, coming on as a 61st-minute substitute as the Hertfordshire side defeated a Tottenham Hotspur XI 4-0 at Broadhall Way.
The Hungary U21 international will hope his warm-up performances have done enough to convince manager Steve Evans he deserves a starting place when Stevenage kick-off their EFL League One campaign at Northampton Town on Saturday 5 August.
Another player who could make his EFL debut in League One this coming weekend is Freddie Potts, who made his pre-season bow for Wycombe Wanderers against Cardiff City on Saturday.
The midfielder started as the Chairboys held their Welsh opponents to a goalless draw in a Testimonial for long-serving Wycombe defender and Cardiff-born former Bluebirds trainee Joe Jacobson. Potts and Matt Bloomfield’s Wycombe kick-off the League One campaign at home to Exeter City.
Last but not least, Kamarai Swyer joined EFL League Two club Crawley Town on loan on Saturday morning and was involved in the Red Devils’ final pre-season fixture at Bromley a few hours later.
The 20-year-old appeared as a second-half substitute as Crawley ran out 2-1 winners at Hayes Lane, where Klaidi Lolos and Danilo Orsi scored the visitors’ goals.
Fresh from signing a new two-year contract with West Ham, the winger will hope to make his competitive debut for the Sussex side at home to Bradford City on Saturday afternoon.
