Flynn Downes in action for Southampton against Cardiff

Loan Watch: Downes helps Saints maintain unbeaten run

Flynn Downes started for Southampton as Russell Martin's EFL Championship promotion-chasers maintained their fine run of form with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

The midfielder was a key performer for the Saints, as two early Adam Armstrong goals proved more than enough to hold off the Bluebirds.

Southampton are now eleven games unbeaten and victory maintains the pressure on top three Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Leeds United.

Downes and Southampton return to action on Saturday when they travel to Watford.

Elsewhere, Mason Terry was another winner at the weekend as Concord Rangers secured an impressive 4-1 home victory against Lewes in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

A Harrison Day hat-trick saw the Canvey Island club sweep to their third league success of the campaign, taking them off the foot of the table in the process.

With games in hand on the teams around them, Concord will look to move away from relegation danger in the coming weeks.

In Denmark, fellow goalkeeper Nathan Trott kept a clean sheet as Vejle BK drew 0-0 at Randers on Friday.

Following a difficult start to the season, eleventh-placed Vejle have now only suffered two defeats in their last nine outings to keep themselves in touch with the likes of Randers, OB and Viborg above them.

Finally, our third goalkeeper out on loan, Krisztián Hegyi, was an unused substitute as Stevenage drew 1-1 with fellow EFL League One side Port Vale in the Emirates FA Cup second round.

The two will now have to replay next midweek, with the winners travelling to National League South outfit Maidstone United in round three.
