Flynn Downes in action for Southampton

Loan Watch: Downes goal helps set Saints record

Our weekly look at how West Ham United’s loanees fared for their clubs across Europe...

Flynn Downes helped Southampton set a new club record as they extended their run without defeat to 21 games following a 3-1 win over Swansea in the EFL Championship.

The Saints surged into the automatic promotion spots - ahead of Ipswich Town's Monday meeting with leaders Leicester City - with Downes adding a memorable afternoon's third goal to cap his 25th birthday.

His first Southampton goal, against his former club too, moved Southampton closer to a swift return to the Premier League.

Next on the Saints’ busy fixture list is the FA Cup fourth round and a trip to Watford this coming Sunday.

There was more positives for the loanees, too, as Krisztián Hegyi made his Dutch Eerste Divisie debut.

A busy week saw the Academy goalkeeper stay unbeaten through his first two fixtures at FC Den Bosch, with action on Monday and Friday.

Hegyi's first appearance in Holland arrived last Monday, when he battled to a 2-2 draw against Jong PSV.

The Academy goalkeeper, who spent the first half of the season on loan at EFL League One side Stevenage, then recorded his first clean sheet of his loan at Den Bosch in a 0-0 draw against Roda on Friday.

Hegyi and company will return to action on Friday 26 January away to Telstar and hope to build on the young stopper’s unbeaten start.

Thilo Kehrer’s Monaco, meanwhile, progressed to the last 16 of the French Cup with a 3-1 win over Rodez on Saturday.

The versatile defender played for 90 minutes, with Adi Hütter’s outfit led to victory by a Wissam Ben Yedder hat-trick at Stade Paul Lignon.

Monaco, who return to league action against Marseille on Saturday 27 January, will face FC Rouen in the next round of the French Cup on 7 February.

Action for the other Hammers loanees was limited, as the weather affected fixtures across the English football pyramid.

Gideon Kodua and Freddie Potts saw their fixture against Port Vale postponed on Saturday, although a quick return to action awaits for Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, and currently sit 17th in EFL League One, with seven wins from their 26 league games.

Likewise, Mason Terry saw his fixture against Hornchurch cancelled.

Concord Rangers’ next outing is away to Kingstonian on Wednesday.
