Lisa Evans says that West Ham United Women need to take each game as it comes in what is a very important week for the Hammers.
The 29-year-old midfielder took some time to reflect on the start to the season that the team have had and hopes that they can show their qualities in this final week before the Christmas break.
“It’s been a good start for us,” Evans said.
“It’s funny because you look at the table at the moment and we’re in 5th so it’s a good start from that point – but I think from the players point of view, I would say that we’re a little bit disappointed that we don’t have more points on the board.
“I think we’ve dropped some silly points in games this season and we probably should have some more points on the board.”
Evans is referring to the team conceding equalisers against Aston Villa, Reading and Birmingham at the Chigwell Construction Stadium – all games that Olli Harder’s side could feasibly say should have come away with all three points.
But Evans recognises it’s important not to dwell too much on the past, and instead looks forward to the week at hand.
“The position that we’re in now is where I thought we would be to be honest, competing with the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and some of the better sides in this league.
“So overall, it’s been a good start and we’re getting better and better as a team as the weeks go on and hopefully, we can show that in the final week of the season.
“We’re taking each game as it comes – we know it’s going to be a long season and we can’t get to ahead of ourselves. This week is important because we want to finish strongly before Christmas, as well as make sure that we get through to the knockout stages of the Conti Cup.
“We want to make sure we start the week well by putting in a good performance against Everton, as well as making sure we come back with a positive result.”
Evans swapped North London for the East in the summer, having joined the Hammers from Arsenal on a season-long-loan move.
It was a move that came almost out of the blue for the Scottish midfielder, but it’s one that has allowed her to play in almost every match that she has been available in – having been injured for a large period during the season so far.
And most importantly, Evans is enjoying the atmosphere around the club at the moment and hopes that it can continue going into the new year.
“There’s a great vibe here at the club, it’s a great environment to be in and be a part of. That always helps when you’re a player that’s trying to perform at your best.
“I’ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to play regularly here at West Ham. I started off with an injury that disrupted things, but I’m getting in the swing of things now. I think coming to West Ham has been a blessing in disguise, and long may that continue,” she said.
