The festive season was in full swing as the Any Old Irons gathered at the historic Boleyn Tavern in East Ham for their annual Christmas celebration.
The over-65s group, brought together by their unwavering love for West Ham United, enjoyed a day steeped in laughter, camaraderie and cherished memories. With the support of the West Ham United Foundation, the event highlighted the Club’s unique bond with its community, reminding everyone why being a Hammer is about more than just football.
More than 40 members of the group attended the event, which included a delicious Christmas lunch, games, music and a lively raffle. The gathering was made extra special by the presence of West Ham legends Brian Dear and Alan Dickens, who joined in the festivities and delighted fans with stories from their playing days.
A walk down memory lane
Dickens, who made over 200 appearances for the Hammers during the 1980s, reflected on the emotional resonance of the day. He said: “It’s been a magical day, walking down Green Street, reminiscing about Upton Park and being surrounded by proper West Ham fans.
“Being here today brings back so many fond memories, and you can feel the energy here when you walk into the room. It’s full of proper East Enders and I can honestly say their love for West Ham is as strong today as it was 30 or 40 years ago.”
More than a Club: a family
Since its inception nearly a decade ago, the Any Old Irons initiative has provided a crucial lifeline for older fans at risk of social isolation. Through regular meet-ups, events and interactions with Club legends, the group fosters a sense of belonging that many describe as familial.
“West Ham does things other clubs don’t,” said Pat, a longstanding member. “They care for their people, arrange events and support those who are struggling. It’s a real family. We look after each other, and whenever we’re together, it’s like coming home.
“Even when it’s tough, I make the effort. My knees hurt today, and the journey took an hour, but I still came because this group means so much to me.”
For fans like Joyce, who is in her 90s, the group provides a vital source of support and encouragement. “Life can get lonely as you get older,” she explained. “But this Club reminds me I’m not alone.
“It’s taught me not to give up and to keep trying, no matter what. Even now, I still make the effort to stay active. My body may not always co-operate, but this Club keeps my spirit going.”
A place of celebration and connection
The Boleyn Tavern added an extra layer of sentiment to the event. Located near the former site of Upton Park, the pub is a cherished landmark for West Ham fans, many of whom grew up just streets away.
Committee member Colin noted: “The Boleyn Tavern holds a special place in our hearts. Seeing everyone come together here, especially at Christmas, is something truly meaningful.”
Among the day’s highlights was the opportunity for members to interact with Club legend Dear, a vital part of the 1963/64 FA Cup-winning side and the subsequent European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph. Dear, a close friend of West Ham icons Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, has been a steadfast supporter of the Any Old Irons initiative.
For Al, a regular attendee, these moments of connection are what make the group so special. “Events like this are brilliant, meeting people, talking, laughing and having a sing song,” he said. “Ever since I joined, it’s been like a family, and I feel like I’ve known them for years. Bringing everyone together and getting to meet some of the old players you used to watch is just amazing.”
The heart of West Ham
As the Any Old Irons approach their tenth anniversary in May 2025, the group continues to embody the spirit of the Club they love. For those who gathered at the Boleyn Tavern, this year’s Christmas party was a celebration of not just the season, but also the lifelong bonds formed through their shared passion for West Ham United.
As the day drew to a close, the room was filled with a renewed sense of togetherness, a testament to the enduring power of the Claret and Blue. For the Any Old Irons, Christmas at the Boleyn Tavern wasn’t just a party, it was a celebration of the East End spirit that makes West Ham United truly special.
