Mohammed Kudus feels there are lessons for West Ham United to learn from Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against Everton.
The Toffees were the victors on a wet and cold afternoon at London Stadium. In a game of limited chances, Dominic Calvert-Lewin registered the only opportunity that mattered early in the second half, placing home the eventual winner.
The home side struggled to find a way through Sean Dyche’s deep-lying Everton side, and Kudus believes the Irons must develop from the performance.
“It was very disappointing,” the Ghanaian told West Ham TV. “We want to win every game, but it’s done now and we need to focus on the next game.
“From the start of the game, we knew we were playing against a very compact team. We knew we would have to do more to create a lot of chances, but we didn’t manage to do that. If you don’t score then you need to not concede, but we didn’t do that today. We need to learn from that and focus on our next game.”
Sunday’s outing in east London marked Kudus’ first Premier League start for the Hammers since joining from Eredivisie side Ajax in the summer.
While the 23-year-old could not help his side to three points, the versatile attacker relished his first chance to show what he can do from the start of the game.
Kudus started the match on the right flank and is happy to fill whatever role he can to help the team.
“I know about my abilities and I know what I can do,” he continued. “I believe a lot in myself so I’m just here, trying to settle in and take in as much information as I can. I want to input that into my game and do what I can for the team.
“The expectation in myself is there. Everyone expects from me because I know myself better than anybody else. I think my best position is as the No10, as the attacking midfielder, but as a team player, when I find myself on the right side then I just want to do my best for the team.”
A hectic schedule continues this week as the Irons return to Carabao Cup action, welcoming Arsenal to London Stadium in the fourth round of the competition.
Kudus is backing the Hammers to produce an improved level of performance in the London derby.
He added: “We definitely want to bounce back against Arsenal. The good thing is there are a lot of games and we don’t have time to be too disappointed.
“The focus now has to be on Arsenal, our next game, and how we do better.”
