Kudus crowned Ghana Player of the Year for second successive season

Mohammed Kudus has been named the Ghana Footballer of the Year for the second successive season after a fantastic 2023/24 season for club and country.

The West Ham United midfielder, who showcased his quality on his debut campaign in Claret and Blue with an impressive goal-involvement haul of 25 from 48 appearances, scored twice for Ghana during the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars suffered a group stage exit.

Now Kudus’ efforts over the season have been rewarded with the Footballer of the Year prize, announced at the sixth edition of the awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday.

“I would like to thank everyone who came here to experience this special award [ceremony] and want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who puts their time and effort into making this event happen today,” Kudus said.

“I am happy to be named as Player of the Year, and is testament of my hard work, my teammates and my family. As part of the new generation, one of my aims is to increase the unity and love between us, and although we are all competing for the same award, it is all healthy competition and is motivation for me and all the upcoming players.

“There have been a lot of legends who have stood on this stage before me and I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for everything they have done in previous years, as they have helped pave the way for us to be here today.”

The 23-year-old’s stunning solo strike against SC Freiburg was also crowned the 2023/24 Ghana Goal of the Year.

Kudus’ goal against SC Freiburg - in the round of 16 second leg - saw him collect the ball inside his own half, before embarking on an electric run through the German side’s defence and neatly finishing into the bottom corner as part of the Irons’ memorable 5-0 win at London Stadium.
