Shelina Zadorsky

Internationals | Zadorsky and Mengwen play full 90 in Pinatar Cup opener

Shelina Zadorsky and Li Mengwen both played all 90 minutes for their respective countries on Wednesday night as Canada and China played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Pinatar Cup clash.

Both West Ham United women’s team players will be delighted they got more minutes in the tank for their nations but it was Canada who were celebrating after a quarter-of-an-hour played, as Julia Grosso latched onto Gabby Carle’s ball over the top before slotting home.

Canada continued to dominate - with Zadorsky making a crucial challenge on Jiali Tang midway through the first period - but moments before the hour mark, China were level. It was striker Jin Kun who restored parity, ruthlessly firing the ball into the roof of the net from inside the box.

Neither team could find a winner, meaning Canada and China both chalked up a point in their Pinatar Cup curtain raiser.

Mexico and Chinese Taipei are the other countries competing in the round-robin tournament, and it’s the former who lead the way after the first set of games following their 4-0 win on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Princess Ademiluyi started for England U19s in their Albir Garden Tournament match against Spain U19s in Alicante on Monday.

The Young Lionesses fell to a 2-0 defeat after goals either side of half-time from Paula Comendador and Marisa García secured victory for the hosts.
