West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez and his Mexico national team have learned their opponents for this summer’s 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which is set to take place in Canada and the United States between 14 June and 6 July.
The draw for the competition was held in the early hours of Friday morning, and has pitted the recently-crowned CONCACAF Nations League champions in Group A, alongside Costa Rica, Suriname and the Dominican Republic.
As well as captaining his country to Nations League glory last month, for the first time in their history, Álvarez is a two-time Gold Cup winner, and featured five and six times in the 2019 and 2023 editions respectively as Mexico roared to their eleventh and 12th titles.

He will therefore be looking to use that pedigree and recent momentum to guide El Tri to further silverware, as well as boost his personal record of five goals in 85 caps, ahead of the FIFA World Cup in 2026 that is set to be co-hosted by Mexico.
Speaking after the successful Nations League final, Álvarez said: “Lifting my first trophy as captain and also Mexico’s first in the Nations League was an incredible moment. It’s one of the most beautiful moments of my life so far.
“I’m grateful for all of the experiences I’ve had, and now we just want to carry on doing well, and competing, ahead of the World Cup, which is going to be an incredible event.”

Also in the draw was Michail Antonio’s Jamaica, who are set to play Panama, Guatemala and Guadeloupe in Group C.
Antonio made five appearances to help the Reggae Boyz to the semi-finals of the 2023 Gold Cup, where they fell 3-0 to Álvarez and eventual winners Mexico.
The 35-year-old has scored five goals in 21 games for his country, but hasn’t featured anywhere - domestically or internationally - since being involved in a serious road traffic accident in December 2024.
Elsewhere, Jesse Marsch’s Canada have been drawn in Gold Cup Group B, with Honduras, El Salvador and Curaçao. Seven-time champions the USA will play Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago and Saudi Arabia in Group D.
