A Shekiera Martinez brace helped West Ham United women’s team deservedly grab a late 2-2 draw at Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
After strikes from Maika Hamano and Aggie Beever-Jones gave Chelsea the upper hand, the Germany U23 international halved the deficit three minutes before the break, as she finished calmly when put through on goal by Riko Ueki.
The Hammers fought throughout the second half to find an equaliser, and after coming close through Verena Hanshaw’s venomous strike from range, Martinez popped up at the back post in second-half stoppage time to earn the Irons a valuable point in the London derby.
The draw lifted Rehanne Skinner's side up to seventh in the WSL table, having picked up eleven points from a possible 24 since the beginning of January, winning three and drawing two of their eight matches, and are unbeaten in their past three league games.
Skinner’s charges became just the third team to take points off Chelsea in the WSL this season, while they also ended the Blues’ season-long winning streak at Kingsmeadow.
