West Ham United women’s team are part of the most exciting Barclays Women’s Super League campaign yet!
The new 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League season is upon us, and there’s no better time to go and watch our Hammers in action!
The team are heading into their sixth season in the top division of English football with a new manager. Rehanne Skinner became the first female manager of the Club’s professional era when she took over in July.
And after being treated to a fantastic month of World Cup action, which saw England reach the final of the tournament, the WSL is back, bigger and better than ever!
Here’s why you should come and watch the women’s team this season.
Exciting new signings…
With a number of new recruits, the women’s team are hoping to better last season’s eighth place finish in the WSL.
Exciting young players Jessie Stapleton and Emma Harries were the first players through the door during the summer window, before Republic of Ireland international Megan Walsh signed on the dotted line.
The window was rounded off by the arrival of Japan No9 Riko Ueki, who notched two goals at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, including one against eventual winners Spain. The forward has ten goals for her country since making her first appearance in 2019.
A world-class league…
The WSL was the most represented league at this summer’s World Cup, and with more and more players heading over to the top division, the level of competition will only increase!
Whilst that will make things challenging for Rehanne Skinner’s team, it means that matches are entertaining due to the quality on show from both sides. Indeed, 14 Manchester City players were called up to represent their respective nations at the tournament – which shows the level of competition throughout the division.
The Hammers themselves had six players who were in action in at the World Cup, with Risa Shimizu and Honoka Hayashi netting goals on Japan’s run to the quarter-finals, whilst Mackenzie Arnold starred for Australia as they made history, reaching the semi-finals for the first time in front of their home support.
A new era begins…
With over 20 years in the women’s game, Rehanne Skinner was the perfect appointment to continue building on the previous five seasons in the WSL.
Skinner had previously worked at rivals Tottenham Hotspur, where she led them to their highest ever finish in the WSL, finishing fifth in the 2021/22 campaign.
The ex-Lionesses assistant manager has already spoken about how she wants her team to have confidence in their play and give the fans positive, front-footed and creative football, whilst also being hard to beat.
And after an intense pre-season that has seen the team already beat fellow WSL outfit Bristol City 3-0 in Dagenham, things are looking good ahead of the opening fixture against the Citizens.
How to watch the team in action at Chigwell Construction Stadium…
Fortunately, getting to the home of our women’s team is very simple. The ground is a short walk from Dagenham East Underground station, which is served by the District line.
From the station, head left and walk down Rainham Road South until you reach Victoria Road, then take a left and the stadium will be directly in front of you.
If you’re heading to the ground from Central London or further east, head to Romford railway station by using Greater Anglia or Elizabeth Line services and then catch the 103 bus from just outside the Station, which stops opposite Victoria Road
Parking is severely limited at Chigwell Construction Stadium, but fans can make use of parking in the streets close by.
Tickets will be available from the Ticket Office at the ground, but we strongly recommend that supporters purchase their tickets online in advance of the fixture!
Alternatively, if you can’t make it down to the stadium for the match, you can watch all of the action on the FA Player, with every match shown on the platform unless chosen for broadcast.
Fixtures may also be selected for coverage on Sky Sports or BBC throughout the season.
