Honoka Hayashi in action for Japan against Spain

Hammers duo help Japan to Women's World Cup win over Spain

West Ham United women's duo Honoka Hayashi and Risa Shimizu helped Japan to a thumping 4-0 victory over Spain in the FIFA Women's World Cup on Monday.

Japan notched three times before half-time on their way to wrapping up top spot in Group C, booking a round of 16 tie against Norway in the process.

Midfielder Hayashi and wing-back Shimizu both started the game in Wellington, New Zealand, as Japan ended their dominant group campaign with a perfect three wins from three and eleven goals scored.

This result was rarely in doubt once Hinata Miyazawa and Riko Ueki fired Japan into a 2-0 lead with just 29 minutes on the clock.

Miyazawa was on target again three minutes before the break as last year's European Championship quarter-finalists were blown away.

Substitute Mina Tanaka added further gloss to the scoreline with a fourth goal in the 82nd minute.

Topping the group means Japan stay in Wellington for their next assignment on Saturday, against Group A runners-up Norway.

Coming into this tournament, Japan had only won one of their previous five World Cup matches, but look well set to better their campaign from four years ago in France, when they were eliminated at the round of 16 stage.

Futoshi Ikeda's side are aiming to emulate their success of 12 years ago, when they lifted the World Cup trophy in Germany.
