West Ham United fought hard but ultimately came up short as the 2023/24 season came to an end with a 1-3 defeat at Premier League champions Manchester City.
Facing hosts who knew they needed to win to guarantee the title, and guaranteed ninth place in David Moyes’ final game as manager, the Hammers faced an early sky blue storm on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon, and fell behind to two Phil Foden goals within 20 minutes.
Alphonse Areola’s heroics kept the difference at two before Mohammed Kudus halved it to one just before half-time, firing high past Stefan Ortega with a sensational overhead kick.
Half-time slowed West Ham’s momentum, though, and Rodri made the game, and the title, safe, when he struck Bernardo Silva’s low lay-off past Areola from the edge of the penalty area just short of the hour.
The Irons finished the campaign in ninth place, with 52 points.
