Flannery features for England U19s in Algarve Cup draw with Portugal

Keira Flannery was the first West Ham United women’s team player in action during the international break when the midfielder featured for England U19s on Tuesday afternoon.

The Young Lionesses are taking part in the Algarve Cup, an invitational tournament being held at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira in Portugal.

England would go behind against the hosts on 14 minutes, giving up possession outside their penalty area, allowing Marisa Correia came inside and slotted the ball through the legs of Eve Annets.

However, good pressure from Lexi Potter allowed Georgia Mullett to race through six minutes later and level proceedings, dinking the ball past the goalkeeper.

Just after the hour mark, England went ahead. Araya Dennis delivered a low cross which hit the hand of a Portugal defender, allowing Freya Godfrey to score.

Flannery entered the field on 69 minutes for Ashanti Akpan, but could not help the Young Lionesses maintain their lead, as the hosts hit back in the final ten minutes. A ball was nicely cut back for Ines Simas to fire into the bottom corner, meaning the points were shared in the opening fixture of the competition.

England and Flannery will now turn their attention to Sweden on Friday 1 December (3pm GMT) before taking on the Netherlands on Monday 4 December (1pm GMT).
