Oona Siren

Five things you need to know about Oona Siren

1. She has won silverware with her country

Now a regular for her national team after making her senior debut in April 2023, Oona Siren has been involved on the international stage since first appearing in her country's youth-age groups in 2017.

Having made two appearances in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, Siren was part of the Finland side that defeated Scotland to lift the Pinatar Cup on their tournament debut in February this year.

Siren has played 14 times for the senior team and will likely be part of the squad when Finland take on Montenegro in a two-legged play-off semi-final next month in their quest for a spot at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

2. She is the first Finnish player to represent the women’s team

Siren becomes just the fourth Finnish player to represent West Ham United, following in the footsteps of Jussi Jääskeläinen, Hannu Tihinen and Daniel Sjölund. Veteran goalkeeper Jääskeläinen made 61 appearances over three seasons with the Irons, and Siren will be hoping to replicate, if not better, the success of her compatriot.

Siren, however, is the first Finnish player to don the famous Claret and Blue shirt for the women’s side.

3. She’s a winner with KuPS

The midfielder enjoyed a trophy-laden period in her homeland with KuPS, where she played her part in securing back-to-back Kansallinen Liiga titles and a Finnish Cup.

Siren played over 50 times across all competitions for the Kuopio-based outfit, including six times in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

KuPS clinched their third consecutive league title last season, finishing seven points clear of their nearest rivals, Åland United, losing just two games throughout the entire campaign.

4. She and her twin sister played together for six seasons in Finland

Oona and her twin sister Emmi are part of a limited list of siblings to have played in the same team - but are there many others who have enjoyed as much success together?

The duo started their professional journey at TiPS in 2018 and spent four seasons together before both made the switch to KuPS in 2022, where they enjoyed never-ending success. Emmi, who has also represented Finland, departed her homeland in 2023 for Danish top-flight side FC Nordsjælland, and won the Kvindeliga title during her first season there.

5. She is excited about playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League

Many declare the Barclays Women’s Super League as the best in the world of women’s football - and our latest summer signing doesn’t think otherwise.

With the new WSL campaign getting underway in just over a week's time at Old Trafford against Manchester United, Siren is relishing the opportunity to test herself against some of the world's highest-regarded players and clubs.

She said: “I’m very excited about it [the prospect of playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League]. I know that the league in England is one of the best in the world, so it’s very interesting to see how everything works here.

“I think the competition here is very difficult, and every team is very good and competitive, and I know that a lot of the best players in the world play in this league, so it is going to be very interesting to see how I get on here.”
