Paulo Wanchope in action in 1999/00

On This Day: Wanchope double downs Derby

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Heineken...

Paulo Wanchope returned to haunt his former club Derby County and earn West Ham United a 2-1 Premier League win on this day in 2000.

The Costa Rican forward, who had joined the Hammers from the Rams for £3.5million in July 1999, was in fine form on familiar turf at Pride Park.

Wanchope headed West Ham in front on 15 minutes when he got in front of his marker to nod Scott Minto's cross inside the near post.

And the striker doubled his haul on 32 when Javier Margas flicked on Paolo Di Canio's left-wing corner and Wanchope controlled before firing low past Mart Poom from around 12 yards.

Dean Sturridge pulled a goal back for Derby six minutes from full-time, but Harry Redknapp's UEFA Intertoto Cup winners would not be denied all three points.

West Ham went on to finish ninth with 55 points, while Wanchope ended his only season in Claret and Blue with 12 goals before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2000.
