On This Day: Second-half strikes see off Middlesbrough

A trio of strikes early in the second half secured a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough for West Ham United on this day in 2007.

A goalless first-half at the Boleyn Ground had been dominated by the Hammers, with a young Mark Noble going close for the hosts before Dean Ashton had an effort ruled out for offside.

Lee Bowyer would give the Irons the lead just 20 seconds into the second half, latching onto a Carlton Cole pass and firing in a well-taken effort from 18 yards for his second goal in successive home games.

Cole would play a crucial role in West Ham's second finish too, evading a challenge before playing a teasing ball into the Middlesbrough penalty area that full-back Luke Young could only divert past Mark Schwarzer and into his own net.

The Hammers' three-goal advantage was secured and the win was wrapped up when Matthew Etherington's low cross was met by Ashton at the far post. The No9 slammed home his strike for his first goal since the 2006 FA Cup final, and first since returning from a long-term injury.
