West Ham started their run to FA Cup glory in 1975 with a third-round win over Southampton at The Dell on this date in the calendar.

The First Division Hammers travelled to the south coast to play the Second Division Saints and emerged victorious thanks to goals from Bobby Gould and Frank Lampard.

The win would come at considerable personal cost to Gould, who suffered a broken leg in a challenge by Saints striker Peter Osgood moments after his header had put the Irons into a two-goal lead.

Mick Channon later scored for the hosts but they couldn't stop John Lyall's team from progressing in the competition which they eventually won after beating Fulham 2-0 in the final.
