Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, presented by Heineken...

Late penalty drama gave West Ham United a much-needed win at Fulham on this day in 2002.

The Irons had endured a difficult start to the season and found themselves in 16th position when they travelled across London to take on the Cottagers - temporarily playing at Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road home due to redevelopment work at Craven Cottage.

It looked as though neither team would force the breakthrough in a tight game, but that changed in the final minute when Jermain Defoe raced clear from Trevor Sinclair's through ball.

He looked set to shoot, but Zat Knight brought him down, giving away a penalty and earning a red card in the process.

Paolo Di Canio did the rest from the spot to give the Hammers the points, although by the end of the season they would suffer the pain of relegation - even though they amassed 42 points.
