On This Day: Defensive duo drop Red Devils

Centre-back pairing Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson each struck with a second-half header to earn West Ham United a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on this day in 2007!

The Irons took the fight to the reigning Premier League champions at the Boleyn Ground and almost got a deserved opener in the first-half, when Hayden Mullins struck the cross-bar.

The Red Devils took the lead on 14 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in Ryan Giggs' cross, and the Portuguese forward had the chance to double the Red Devils' advantage from the penalty spot on 66 minutes.

However, Ronaldo would turn his spot-kick wide, giving the Hammers the opening to fight back into the fixture.

Mark Noble's superb corner was met by Ferdinand on 77 minutes to restore parity and, just five minutes later, the future West Ham captain would again deliver a lovely ball into the area from a free-kick.

This time, Matthew Upson would rise highest, turning home his first West Ham goal to secure the three points for Alan Curbishley's side.
