Tony Cottee

On This Day: Cottee's historic hat-trick

Tony Cottee scored West Ham United's historic first-ever Premier League hat-trick to see off Manchester City on this day in 1994.

The prolific marksman lived up to his reputation by netting twice in quick succession inside the opening ten minutes, first by smashing home after Eike Immel had saved his initial shot, then by collecting Tim Breacker's pass, turning his man and shooting past the German goalkeeper.

And Cottee completed his treble by latching on to Ian Bishop's threaded through ball, turning Alan Kernaghan and firing into the bottom corner.

West Ham would finish the season 14th on 50 points, while City would end it three places and one point worse off.
