Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, presented by Heineken...

West Ham United gave another memorable European performance on this day in 1980, smashing four goals past Romanian opponents Politehnica Timișoara in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round first leg.

The FA Cup holders had come from two goals down to defeat Spanish side Castilla 6-4 on aggregate in the first round, and continued that free-scoring form against the Romanian Cup holders.

Three goals in the space of six first-half minutes all but settled the tie early on, as Billy Bonds, Paul Goddard and a Ray Stewart penalty delighted the 27,157 supporters at the Boleyn Ground.

David Cross added a fourth goal seven minutes from full-time, rendering a 1-0 defeat in the second leg in Timișoara a mere consolation for their opponents.

West Ham were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Soiviet Cup holders Dinamo Tbilisi, who would go on to defeat East German club Carl Zeiss Jena in the final to lift the trophy.
