Dagný Brynjarsdóttir signs contract extension

West Ham United women’s team are delighted to confirm that Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has signed a contract extension with the Club.

Since signing for the Hammers in January 2021, Brynjarsdóttir has been instrumental, featuring 65 times across all competitions and scoring 17 goals.

Ahead of the 2022/23 season, the midfielder was named captain for the campaign, becoming the second skipper in the full-time Club’s history - taking over the role from the women’s team's record appearance holder, Gilly Flaherty.

The 32-year-old has worked her way back to fitness after giving birth to her second son, Andreas, in February, and was named in the matchday squad for last Saturday’s Barclays Women’s Super League finale against Tottenham Hotspur.

Away from the pitch, Brynjarsdóttir's story featured in the West Ham United original documentary, Ómarsson. An industry first, the film followed the Iceland international’s journey with pregnancy as a professional sportswoman and the barriers female athletes face when making the decision to start a family.

On signing her one-year contract extension, Brynjarsdóttir expressed her excitement at extending her stay with the Club that she supports.

“I’m delighted to be extending my contract at West Ham United,” she said. “West Ham are not just signing me, but they are also signing my family and everything that comes with being a mother. I’m happy here, my family are happy here, and this Club feels like a family to me.

“I’m extremely grateful to everyone for the support I’ve received since the birth of my second son, and it made my decision very easy.

“I’m already excited for what next season has in store, and I'm looking forward to helping the team move forwards in the right direction.”

Women's team manager Rehanne Skinner shared her delight at the news that Brynjarsdóttir will remain part of her squad.

“We are pleased that Dagný has agreed to extend her contract with us,” said Skinner.

“It was great to welcome Dagný and her family back to Chadwell Heath after the birth of her second son, and with the support of the Club she has been working hard over the last three months to return to the pitch as safely as possible.

“Dagný’s passion for West Ham United is clear to see. She knows what it means to play for this badge, and her experience and leadership qualities will be a real asset to the team next season.”

Everyone at West Ham United would like to congratulate Dagný on her new contract.
