Recognising their engagement off the pitch to inspire their communities, Vladimír Coufal and Shannon Cooke have been named West Ham United’s PFA Community Champions.
This award sees Premier League, EFL and Barclays Women's Super League clubs nominate players who have embodied their community organisations’ values throughout the season, raising awareness of the outstanding support that PFA members provide within community activities.
Vladimír Coufal, who was recently presented with the Players’ Project award for his support of the West Ham United Foundation’s community programmes, has been extremely engaged with the Club's efforts to educate, motivate and inspire the communities they serve.
From primary schools and university settings to football pitches, frontline services and beyond, Coufal has immersed himself across all environments. Regardless of people’s circumstances, age, ability or any other factor, the Czech international has shown exceptional commitment to making a positive difference
“To be recognised for this award and win something not related to my performances on a football pitch is something very special,” he remarked. “The whole east London community is connected by our Club and the work that the Foundation does.
“Whether at a local school, a university, a hospital - the love and passion that people have for West Ham is clear to see. Football has the power to change lives and I feel fortunate to be in the position that I am to try to help others.”
Similarly, Cooke has been an outstanding role model, going above and beyond to show support for community activities. Using her platform as a WSL player to help break down barriers for females in sport, she has been proactive in attending activities that provide young girls with the chance to take part in sport and fulfil their potential.
Whether it be interacting with fans on matchday or showing support at community football sessions or schools, she is passionate about equitable opportunities and shares a sense of responsibility for advocating for the next generation.
“Ever since I joined the Club in January 2023, it’s been clear to see the impact that the Club has across east London and Essex. It’s such an exciting time right now and the women’s game is continuing to grow. For us, as players, to have the opportunity to help and inspire others within the local community through the Players’ Project and the work of the West Ham Foundation, is something that we take real pride in.”
Commenting on the importance of recognising players’ efforts in supporting their Club’s community work, PFA CEO Maheta Molango said: “The PFA has once again been immensely proud of the outstanding efforts of players like Vladimír and Shannon this season and we feel they should be recognised for their support and involvement in the local community.
"The Award will hopefully raise awareness of the importance many of our members attach to their roles off the pitch and highlight their continued commitment to support those most in need along with engaging in areas where they have a personal interest.”
