Dagny Brynjarsdottir said that West Ham United Women showed Chelsea ‘too much respect’ in their defeat on Thursday evening.
The Barclays Women’s Super League Champions showed their class in the semi-finals of the Continental Tyres League Cup, putting seven goals past the Hammers without reply.
And the Captain said that her side made it too easy for the Blues to create opportunities and ultimately win the match by the scoreline that they did.
“It’s quite embarrassing if I’m being completely honest," she told whufc.com at the full-time whistle.
“You never want to be losing 7-0 at home, regardless of how good the opposition are. We didn’t start on the front foot and I think we showed them too much respect out there tonight.
“Those goals are too easy for them – we know they do have world class players, but I think we need to do better as a team to make it harder for them.”
The Hammers found themselves a goal down after only three minutes on a cold evening at Chigwell Construction Stadium, with Australia international Sam Kerr netting the first of her four goals in only the third minute of the game.
It was a stark contrast to their battling 0-0 draw against Arsenal in the WSL only four days prior, and Brynjarsdottir was frustrated that they couldn’t emulate a similar performance against Chelsea.
“It’s frustrating – we got a point against Arsenal a couple of days ago and we really wanted to build on that with another good performance against a top side.
“We all need to look back at what we could have done better and make sure a result like this doesn’t happen again.”
Brynjarsdottir heaped praise on the West Ham United supporters, who stayed until the very end, cheering on their side despite the scoreline.
“It was amazing to have the fans with us today – we heard them the whole and it’s always good to have their backing.
“We’re gutted that we couldn’t put in a better performance for them tonight, but I hope they’re enjoyed our run to the semi-finals.
“Obviously we’re disappointed we couldn’t go that one step further and get to the final, but it didn’t work out for us tonight,” she concluded.
