Brynjarsdóttir: We battled really well against Liverpool

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir was proud of her West Ham United teammates for reaching the semi-finals of the Continental Tyres FA Women's League Cup.

The Hammers beat Liverpool 1-0 at Prenton Park in the quarter-final clash to book their place in the last four on Wednesday evening.

The 31-year-old Iceland international scored the only goal of the game with three minutes of normal time remaining, rising above the Reds’ defence to power a trademark header beyond Faye Kirby.

And now the captain is looking forward to the prospect of playing in a semi-final with her club.

“We’re really happy with the result,” the midfielder told whufc.com. “I definitely think that our play deserved the win.

“That was probably some of the best football that we’ve played this season. We needed to create a little bit more in and around their box, but overall, I think we did well.

“We’re just delighted to be able to make the semi-finals, it’s something that all of us are very proud of. We want to go all the way to the finals. It’s always our aim to win, so lets see how far we can go.”

The Hammers have struggled for goals since returning from the festive break, and Brynjarsdottir’s late header was the first they have scored since the hiatus.

Indeed, it was also the first time the Irons had won since beating Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Women’s Super League in December, and Brynjarsdóttir was pleased to help the side get back to winning ways.

“We’ve been grinding to get this win,” she said. “It’s been tough with the games that we’ve had. I know that we were particularly disappointed with the way things went against Everton last weekend [in a 3-0 WSL defeat].

“It was a hardworking performance, we had to really defend well at times and earn that clean sheet. It was a real team effort and we got what we deserved I feel. It’s been a tough week with the traveling with 20 hours in total on the bus – two trips to Merseyside in three days is hard, so we’re excited to get back to London now ahead of the game against Wolves.”

That game against Wolverhampton Wanderers will se the Hammers hit the road again, this time to AFC Telford United's New Bucks Head stadium, in the Women's FA Cup fourth round, on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

Ahead of that, the draw for the Conti Cup semi-finals will take place on Thursday 26 January at 4.30pm, when they could face either Chelsea, Manchester City or the winners of the Arsenal v Aston Villa quarter-final tie. The draw will be broadcast live on talkSPORT2.

After an arduous week of travel, it is fair to say that the skipper is hoping for a home draw!

“All I want to do is play in London!” she smiled. “I think I speak for the team when I say that it would be great to get a home game, or one of the London clubs.”
