The Opposition

Bristol City are currently sat bottom of the WSL table on goal difference, but like the Hammers, their performances in recent times have shown encouragement that they could pull away from the drop zone.

Since the turn of the year, the Robins have narrowly lost out to Liverpool (1-0) in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round, and on Monday, they lost 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Broadfield Stadium, with Elisabeth Terland scoring a 95th minute winner for the Seagulls. Narrow margins, then as the Hammers head to the Southwest.

Bristol City

Lauren Smith has been able to strengthen her squad in January, bringing in goalkeeper Shae Yáñez from San Diego Wave, Sarah Stratigakis from Vittsjö GIK and former West Ham winger Lisa Evans, who left east London by mutual consent on Thursday.

Smith will be hoping that those new additions can help supplement the existing talent in the City squad, and propel them away from danger in the second half of the season.

Another former Hammer, Amalie Thestrup leads the scoring charts for Bristol this term, scoring five goals in 15 appearances so far this season.

Previous Meetings

The Hammers have beaten the Robins three times, and have drawn and lost one game, facing them five times in competitive action.

In their first fixture in November 2018, West Ham won 2-0 with goals from Alisha Lehmann and Jane Ross. Next up, in April 2019, West Ham earned a comeback 2-1 win thanks to Ross’ 89th-minute finish. The Hammers earned their largest win over Bristol in December 2020 with a 4-0 result at Twerton Park. However, in February 2021, the teams shared points.

Last time out, in November, the Hammers were on the end of a 3-2 defeat at Chigwell Construction Stadium. Goals from Riko Ueki and Viviane Asseyi weren’t enough to see the Hammers pick up points.
