Conti Cup – the story so far

West Ham United were drawn in Group E alongside the Seagulls, Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic.

It would be the Addicks who played the Hammers in the opening fixture at the group, with the contest taking place at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Wednesday 11 October.

Rehanne Skinner’s side battled back from a goal down after Carla Humphrey hit them on the counter attack, but Emma Harries and Izzy Atkinson found the net in the second half to get the campaign off to a positive start in front of the Claret & Blue faithful.

The Opposition

Brighton & Hove Albion are hoping that 2023/24 will be the start of a new era for the club. After appointing former London City Lionesses boss Melissa Phillips in April 2023, their third manager of the season after the departures of Hope Powell and Jens Scheuer, the Club retained the WSL status after picking up seven points from their final seven matches.

Since then, it’s been a summer of change for the Seagulls, who have backed the American boss in the transfer market. Brighton saw ten permanent arrivals through the door, which included former Manchester City midfielder Vicky Losada and UEFA Women’s Champions League winner Pauline Bremer.

There were ten permanent outs too, with long-serving players like Victoria Williams, Kayleigh Green and Megan Connolly all moving on. Megan Walsh also left the Club, joining West Ham United in August.

So far this season, Albion have seven points on the board in the WSL from their first seven matches, beating Everton on the opening day as well as pulling off a shock victory over Manchester City in recent weeks.

In the Conti Cup, Phillips’ side made a winning start, just like the Hammers. The Seagulls beat Birmingham City 3-0 at St Andrew’s, with Charlize Rule, Katie Robinson and Elisabeth Terland finding the net in their victory.

Previous Meetings

West Ham and Brighton have met once already this season, and it was the Irons who came out on top. In the second fixture of the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League season, Skinner’s side beat the Seagulls thanks to goals from Kirsty Smith and Riko Ueki – both of whom notched their first in Claret & Blue.

The two teams are used to meeting in this competition, having faced off in the past two seasons. Last term, the sides played out a 0-0 draw, and despite West Ham’s qualification already being confirmed, the two sides had to play out a penalty shootout for the extra point, with the hosts coming out on top on penalties.

In the previous campaign, goals from Mel Filis, Kate Longhurst and Kateřina Svitková secured a 3-0 victory for then-manager Olli Harder at Chigwell Construction Stadium.
