Jarrod Bowen could not hide his disappointment at seeing West Ham United squander a promising position to lose 3-1 at Liverpool on Sunday.
The Irons had done well to pull level through Bowen’s fine diving header after Mohamed Salah’s penalty had stopped the visitors’ early momentum on Merseyside.
But, after Bowen himself saw a header saved by Alisson ten minutes into the second half, Liverpool went on to score further goals through Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota to take all three points and condemn the Londoners to a seventh straight defeat at Anfield.
“We just conceded goals and it fell out of our hands a bit, so I’m just disappointed to lose the game,” said a deflated Bowen.
“I think we had a few chances and when you come here and have chances you have to take them because coming away to Anfield is never easy and we created good chances and maybe we should have put them away, but we’ve also got to keep the ball out of our net as well to give us the best chance we’ve got right until the end of the game.”
Bowen was asked why West Ham were unable to match the intensity and resilience they showed in the first half in the second period, allowing Liverpool to increasingly grow in confidence, particularly after Uruguayan Núñez had volleyed the home side in front on the hour-mark.
“Maybe we dropped off a bit and we gave them too much time and they probably upped their quality as well,” the No20 observed. “It was a game of two halves because we were probably happy going in [at half-time] with a draw because we’d played some good stuff and created some good chances, but in the second half we didn’t create as much as what we wanted.”
For Bowen, defeat meant he was not able to fully enjoy scoring for the fourth Premier League away game in a row to start the 2023/24 season – a new Club record.
After netting at AFC Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Luton Town, the 26-year-old was on target again, getting in front of Virgil van Dijk to head Vladimír Coufal’s low cross expertly past Alisson and in off the post.
“I always want to get in the box when the ball is wide and the ball just came in and it was low. It was my first instinct to head the ball and watching it go into the bottom corner was nice, but it counts for nothing so I can’t be too happy about it, but scoring a goal is always nice.
“I always want to score goals and get assists and create for the team as I feel I can bring things to the team going forward, so I want to keep scoring, keep assisting and keep winning games for this Club and long may it continue for the rest of the season.”
