‘We need to continue on this road’ is the message from Marika Bergman Lundin ahead of West Ham United women’s team’s Barclays Women’s Super League clash at home to Everton on Sunday.
The Hammers return to Chigwell Construction Stadium buoyed by their Subway® Women’s League Cup quarter-final victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, which saw stunning goals from Seraina Piubel and Kirsty Smith book the women’s team a semi-final tie at Chelsea in early February.
The 25-year-old made her fourth successive start in the League Cup at Gaughan Group Stadium, playing all 90 minutes as she partnered Oona Siren in midfield until the hour mark, when captain Katrina Gory replaced the Finland international.
Breaking up play and linking defence to attack by picking up pockets of space, Bergman Lundin impressed against Spurs, and hopes the London derby victory can reignite her side's WSL form.
“You get a lot of confidence from it [the win], you get good energy, and you can build on that,” said the Sweden international.
“I think it was a great performance, so we need to take that with us and continue on this road.
“It's always nice to win games, especially when it's in a cup and you go through. I think we showed a lot [of team spirit to beat Tottenham]. It was a good feeling out there, and everyone was supporting and helping each other.
“I loved it [playing in the atmosphere in east London]. I love when there's a lot of people watching. Our fans are always vocal, you can always hear them.”
Levelling proceedings on Wednesday night, Piubel finished off a flowing counter-attack with a clinical first-time strike from inside the box, and five minutes later, Smith’s long-range free-kick evaded everyone in the penalty area before finding the back of the net.
And Bergman Lundin was delighted with the goals her side scored in east London.
“The first one is a great team goal, a great counter-attack and [Piubel was able to] just hit it in,” she said.
“And then Kirsty's, what can you say? It goes straight through and I don't think she even saw it going in!
“She just saw our reaction and was like, ‘I’ll celebrate to that’. They were two good goals.”
