Marika Bergman Lundin said that West Ham United women’s team handled the blustery conditions well as they beat London City Lionesses 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Hayes Lane in Bromley was subject to howling winds created by Storm Bert, but that didn’t stop Rehanne Skinner’s side from registering their second win in as many matches in the Women’s League Cup. The victory sees them take a stronghold on Group C as they look to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition by topping their group.
Swedish midfielder Bergman Lundin was making her second start of the season, having also started in the 6-1 demolition of Portsmouth in the previous cup match. The 25-year-old was delighted to be back out there from the start, despite the weather!
“It’s great to have that winning feeling again,” Bergman Lundin told whufc.com.
“I thought we handled the conditions really well out there today. We didn’t have the wind in our favour in the first half, which was a really big advantage today. We managed to keep ourselves in the game and then we were able to use it against them in the second half.
“We had to work hard at times, and it wasn’t easy, but we got the job done and I’m pleased that we’ve made it two wins from two in this competition.”
Bergman Lundin helped to get things started at Hayes Lane, as she slid an instinctive pass through for Viviane Asseyi to calmly slot through the legs of Pride goalkeeper Grace Moloney with the game just 14 minutes old.
She was pleased to be able to lay on the assist for her teammate, and said that the whole team is happy to have made it ten goals scored in the competition so far.
“I like to play forward balls,” she explained. “Vivi is great in those pockets, and when she gets into a situation like that, you’re really confident that she’s going to find the back of the net.
“It's really important for us to do as well as we can in each competition, and we’ve made a really strong start in the League Cup. It’s good that we can show that we’re capable of scoring a lot of goals, and it’s nice to do it just before the the international break as well.
“It sends us all into the break feeling really positive, and I hope we can come back and continue that feeling in the final three games before Christmas.”
