Izzy Atkinson couldn’t help the Republic of Ireland to avoid defeat in their second group stage match at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Girls in Green faced off against Canada at the Perth Rectangular Stadium on Wednesday as they looked to register their first ever point at a World Cup.
Vera Pauw’s side took the lead after only four minutes into the contest. Arsenal’s Katie McCabe would find the back of the net directly from an in swinging corner that deceived goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.
Canada dominated possession as they looked to get back into the game, and they found an equaliser just before the break. Megan Connolly was the player that inadvertently headed beyond her own goalkeeper.
After the break, former Hammer Adriana Leon calmly slotted a second and the eventual winner beyond Courtney Brosnan on 53 minutes.
Atkinson entered the field for the final 25 minutes but wasn’t able to help her country back into the game. The Republic of Ireland's dream of advancing are now mathematically over.
Ireland will be looking to end their maiden World Cup campaign on a high when they face off against Nigeria on Monday 31 July in Brisbane.
