Vivane Asseyi in action for France against Panama

Asseyi's France through to World Cup knockouts

Viviane Asseyi earned her first minutes of the FIFA Women's World Cup as France booked their place in the round of 16 with a thrilling 6-3 victory over Panama.

Having drawn with Jamaica and beaten Brazil in their opening two fixtures, Les Bleues needed a point to make sure of progression and ultimately got the victory which secured top spot in Group F.

The three points did not come without a shock first, as Panama took a second-minute lead through midfielder Marta Cox.

France soon established control though, and were level 19 minutes later thanks to Maëlle Lakra.

A brace from Kadidatou Diani and Léa Le Garrec's strike on the stroke of half-time meant France led 4-1 at the interval.

Asseyi was called from the bench at half-time to earn her 63rd cap for her country and the action kept on coming as Diani completed her hat-trick with her second penalty of the game.

Panama then pulled two goals back through Yomira Pinzón and Lineth Cedeño, but France had the last word as Vicki Bécho added an injury time sixth.

The highly entertaining win meant France finished as Group F winners and will take on the runners-up of Group H in Adelaide on Tuesday 8 August.

Group H comes to a conclusion on Thursday, with all four teams - Colombia, Germany, Morocco and South Korea - still in the hunt.

Asseyi's France join Japan duo Risa Shimizu and Honoka Hayashi, Australia's Mackenzie Arnold and Denmark midfielder Emma Snerle in the group of Hammers who have made it to the knockout stages.
