Viviane Asseyi believes that West Ham United women’s team have finally been paid for the good performances they have produced this season.
The France attacker scored what would turn out to be the winning goal in a 2-1 victory on 56 minutes, showing fantastic composure to squeeze the ball beyond Robins goalkeeper Shae Yanez after Jess Ziu had played her in behind.
Asseyi now have five goals in all competitions, with four of those coming in the Barclays Women’s Super League, meaning she leads the scoring charts for the Club so far this season.
And she was in high spirits after the game, as she reflected on the Hammers’ first win of the calendar year.
“It feels really good to come away with all three points,” she told West Ham TV at the full time whistle.
“We’ve worked really hard to get these three points today from an important game, so we’re happy.
“We’re all really really happy, you can see it in the dressing room because we all know that we worked hard all together today, and finally got paid for all of our work.
“We’re not finished, we know that the season is long, so we have to keep working hard.”
Asseyi scored from the penalty spot in the reverse fixture in November, and her goal this time around required similar levels of concentration and composure.
The 30-year-old had plenty of time to think about what to do when she was running in behind and revealed that it was a topic of conversation amongst her teammates at full time.
“In the dressing room they say that they were all stressed because I took a lot of time to shoot, but I knew that it was really important that I scored this goal.
“The team gave me confidence to score, we all worked so hard and everyone did a fantastic job today.”
The win moves the Irons three points ahead of the Robins, who now sit rooted to the bottom of the WSL standings.
Asseyi is hoping that this win can kick start a run of matches where the Hammers can turn more good performances into points.
“I hope that this can be, the three points will help us a lot. Now we have a lot of games coming up, we start with Arsenal and every game is different.
“We know that we have to work hard in every game, and we need to give everything because we don’t have as many points as we need.
“We need a lot of points, and if we play like today and keep working all together, I think we will have a nice end to the season,” Asseyi concluded.
