Match-winner Viviane Asseyi insists West Ham United women’s teams first victory of the campaign is ‘just the beginning’ for their Barclays Women’s Super League season.

The forward was on target in Rehanne Skinner’s side’s 1-0 victory over Leicester City at Chigwell Construction Stadium, scoring in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time with a composed finish after taking the ball around visiting goalkeeper Janina Leitzig.

Rounding off a superb team move, Asseyi latched onto Manuela Paví’s inch-perfect through ball that unlocked the Leicester defence, following expert trickery from the Colombia international.

The winning strike was Asseyi’s first goal of the WSL campaign after she netted a brace in the Hammers’ 6-1 dispatching of Portsmouth in the Women’s League Cup.

“It feels so good. I think we worked hard for that. Every day we work. We weren’t so lucky in the last game but we’ll enjoy today,” she said.

“It was a good, collective, team goal. All of the girls worked really hard and the pass from Paví was perfect. I saw the goalkeeper going down and we saw some video footage of the goalkeeper, so I knew what I had to do.

“The last game we also dominated and we didn’t have a victory at the end. Today’s good because the work finally paid off and we have to keep going because it’s just the beginning."

Asseyi's goal rounded off a fantastic team performance for those in Claret & Blue, a performance that certainly excited the West Ham faithful, who backed the team to their first clean sheet of the campaign.

She continued: “[Keeping a clean sheet] is really positive. What you want in football is to win games and not concede goals. Today was great, of course we have to work on some parts like always, but it was good.

“We have to enjoy today because sometimes when you work hard you don’t get something, today we got it. It’s good to enjoy it and go back next week to work for an important game, but it’s a good thing that we won today.”
