Following her brace at Hayes Lane, forward Viviane Asseyi was delighted to add to her tally in the Women’s League Cup in her side’s 4-1 win at London City Lionesses, and hailed the work of teammate Manuela Paví following the Colombian international’s first goal for the Club.
Asseyi gave West Ham United women’s team the lead against the hosts with an excellent finish through the legs of goalkeeper Grace Moloney, after she latched onto Marika Bergman Lundin’s perfectly-timed through ball.
Her second, her fourth in the competition, came in the second half as she again remained composed in front of goal, this time rounding Moloney before slotting the ball home.
The win, which was also secured thanks to a goal from Riko Ueki deep into second-half stoppage time, keeps Rehanne Skinner’s side flying high at the top of the Group C standings and provides the perfect platform to build on ahead of the international break.
“It was a good win this afternoon,” said two-goal Asseyi. “I’m always happy when I score. We wanted the victory and it’s always good to help the girls.
“I hope I score more goals in the league too, but I take these two goals.
“As a striker, you have to be calm. You have to look where the goalkeeper is and I saw that, on my first goal, the way the goalkeeper came out and stayed, so I nutmegged her, as I knew it was difficult for her.
“And the second one, she came out faster so I knew I had to dribble around her.
“The win is good for the team, especially after we lost last week, so it’s good to come back with this victory.
“Everyone now has to work hard with their national team and we have three more games [before Christmas], so we have to stay concentrated and work hard for that.”
Asseyi and Paví have already shown their connection on the pitch, through the former’s goal against Leicester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League, and the French international was all smiles when her teammate got off the mark in Claret and Blue this afternoon.
“I’m so happy for her [Paví], she deserves it,” Asseyi added. “She works hard every day and as a striker it’s always good to score. I don’t know if you saw but I was celebrating for her.
“It’s also good for Riko [Ueki, to score], she gave me a good pass and then she scored herself, so we’re all happy.”
