On This Day: Steve Lomas and Ian Pearce ensure Hammers secure seventh place

West Ham United concluded their Premiership campaign with a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at Boleyn Ground on this day in 2002.

Goals from Steve Lomas and Ian Pearce ensured Glenn Roeder’s side leapfrogged London rivals Tottenham Hotspur - who lost 2-1 to Leicester City on the final day – to record a seventh-placed league finish.

The Hammers took the lead on the stroke of half-time when a stinging effort from Jermain Defoe on the edge of the box was parried out only as far as Lomas, who was on hand to turn the ball into the net with minimal fuss.

The visitors got themselves back on terms in the 67th minute in fortunate fashion. Youri Djorkaeff’s free-kick took a cruel deflection and left David James with little chance in the West Ham goal.

As time ticked down, however, West Ham ensured that the three points would be staying in east London. Ian Pearce climbed highest to meet Michael Carrick’s corner, and his header flew past Jussi Jaaskelainen to move the Irons up to seventh on the final day.
