On This Day: Brooking, Green and Holland give Chelsea the blues

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

West Ham United came back from a goal down to stun Chelsea 3-1 at the Boleyn Ground on this day in 1978.

Bill Garner put the visitors ahead with a powerful header from a corner, but the Blues were quickly put on the back foot after an injury to their goalkeeper John Phillips.

Substitute striker Tommy Langley donned the gloves after Phillips was deemed unable to continue and the forward's relative inexperience between the sticks soon told as the Hammers got themselves back on terms. A sweeping corner from Trevor Brooking eluded Langley, who had come to claim, and snuck in at the near post.

Minutes later, Bill Green put the Irons ahead for the first time. The defender found himself in the right place at the right time to head low into the corner and send the Claret and Blue Army into raptures.

A slick counter-attacking move from John Lyall’s side completed the scoring, as Brooking slid in Pat Holland and the midfielder made no mistake to ensure the two points stayed in east London.
