West Ham United has issued the following update regarding defenders Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna.
As a precaution, Diop was replaced at half-time in midweek following a clash of heads with Manchester United’s Anthony Martial. With player safety and welfare of paramount importance, the Club’s medical team continues to administer checks on the centre-back, all in line with the relevant protocols, which are supported by the Premier League and The FA.
He has suffered no adverse effects and the Club fully expects him to be cleared to play against Sheffield United. All results will be shared with the Premier League and The FA as communication continues between the parties.
Diop said: “Our medical team are very thorough and I’ve been looked after to the highest possible standards as always. I feel absolutely fine and I’m looking forward to our game on Monday.”
Ogbonna unfortunately suffered a sprain in his left ankle in a challenge with Martial during the first half of Tuesday’s game. The centre-back has undergone a scan and orthopaedic assessment, with him due to spend a period of time in a protective boot to prevent further damage.
An accurate timescale for Ogbonna’s injury will become clearer as he continues to be assessed as part of his rehabilitation. The Club wishes Angelo a full and speedy recovery.
Manager David Moyes will offer a further team news update during his press conference on Friday afternoon (12 February) at 1.30pm.
