On This Day: Frederic Kanoute goal helps Hammers hold off Magpies

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

West Ham United scored their first home Premier League win in six months on this day in 2000.

Centre forward Frederic Kanoute was the Hammers' hero in a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United, latching onto a neat ball from substitute Davor Suker, turning and firing past Shay Given in the 73rd minute.

The strike not only ended the Irons' own winless run at the Boleyn Ground, but also stretched Newcastle's winless run in London to an amazing 20 matches stretching back three years!

Earlier, Alan Shearer had hit the post for the Magpies, while Frank Lampard went close twice for West Ham, seeing a header bounce narrowly over and Given tip his rasping strike over the crossbar. Kanoute and Joe Cole also missed decent chances as the home side dominated in east London, before the Mali international finally broke the deadlock with 17 minutes to play.
