The West Ham United Foundation has today, on National Mentoring Day, launched its new employability scheme ‘The Training Ground: Career Development and Mentoring’, providing a football themed personal development programme for young people in east London aged 16-25-years.
The initiative will provide participants with core employability sessions, such as, CV masterclasses, job searching, job application, networking, interview skills, communication skills, professional workplace and employer insight experience, with the objective of improving their skills and advancing their career success.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severely detrimental impact on employment with job losses and poverty rates soaring, and many people either unemployed, furloughed, or having had to reconsider or change their careers. As such, and following the success of the Foundation’s video series The Training Ground: Careers Insight and Guidance, they’ve added to their range of employability programmes, introducing this new offer.
The Foundation's Head of Learning, Jesse Foyle, said: “At the Foundation, we’re focused on meeting the needs of the community and mentoring plays a large role in our outreach. Our team aims to provide an environment where all can thrive and part of that is building a strong rapport and offering opportunities which helps each individual fulfil their potential.
“We have an array of schemes which particularly focus on learning and employability and our efforts across this area have enhanced in direct response to the impact of the pandemic.
“We started The Training Ground as a YouTube series and we’re delighted to evolve this into a new offer which aspires to help individuals to grow and take the next step on their career pathway.
“As well as the interactive curriculum on offer, participants will benefit from key insight and updates on employment opportunities from our vast network of trusted partners.”
‘The Training Ground: Career Development and Mentoring’ will be delivered over ten weeks, involving one-to-one and group mentoring sessions, fun sports activities, and a curriculum which encourages and enables personal development and growth.
Furthermore, participants can expect to gain employability skills and accreditations, improved self-esteem, confidence and motivation, and receive coaching and mentoring from industry professionals; helping to refine their career goals and ambitions.
