West Ham United secured Premier League safety with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on this day in 2014.
The Hammers defeated their London rivals on a sunny afternoon at the Boleyn Ground courtesy of an own-goal from Harry Kane and Stewart Downing’s free-kick.
The Irons were dominant against Tim Sherwood’s Spurs, who were on the losing side to West Ham for the third time that season, having been beaten by Sam Allardyce’s side at White Hart Lane in both the Premier League and EFL Cup.
Tottenham’s hopes were not helped when Younes Kaboul was sent-off midway through the first half for fouling Downing as the West Ham man raced through on goal and moments later the home side were in front when Andy Carroll’s header was diverted into the net by Kane.
And it was 2-0 before half-time when Downing’s low free-kick eluded the wall and bounced into the bottom right-hand corner of Hugo Lloris’s net.
West Ham totaled 20 shots and only Lloris’s heroics kept the score down as the hosts ended their home slate of fixtures with three deserved points.
