On This Day: Carlton Cole scores fine Wigan winner

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold...

Carlton Cole's superb first-half strike proved decisive as West Ham United cemented seventh place with victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on this day in 2009.

Cole finished a fine passing move with a curled finish eleven minutes before half-time, but three minutes later he was sent off for a second booking!

Wigan saw future Hammer Mido's header hit a post before Lee Cattermole was dismissed seven minutes after the break for a reckless challenge on Scott Parker.

Mark Noble - one of five West Ham players booked by referee Stuart Attwell - had two chances to extend West Ham's lead, but ultimately Cole's goal was enough to secure all three points.

Basset & Gold are West Ham United's official sleeve sponsor and eSports partner.
