On This Day: Morley penalty sees off plucky Coventry

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

A second-half penalty from Trevor Morley proved decisive as Billy Bonds' West Ham United defeated Coventry City 3-2 at Boleyn Ground, on this day in 1993.

In their first Premier League season, the Irons took an early lead through Tim Breacker and doubled that shortly before half-time via Peter Butler - but that cushion didn't last long, with Julian Darby pulling one back for the visitors from close range scarcely a minute later.

Just before the hour mark, West Ham once again took a two-goal lead when Morley calmly dispatched his penalty after Peter Ndlovu had barged over Mike Marsh inside the area.

But back came Coventry 17 minutes later, with Darby attacking a cross around the penalty spot and flicking in past Ludek Miklosko.

Despite some late pressure, it was Morley's goal which ultimately settled the score, however, giving Bonds' Hammers an eighth Premier League win of the season to further solidify their top-flight credentials.
