Cresswell: We're in a tough patch and need to stick together

Aaron Cresswell admitted he and his West Ham United teammates are going through a tricky period and feels the only way for the side to come through is to continue to work as a unit.

The Irons' 3-2 defeat at home to Newcastle on Saturday means Manuel Pellegrini's team are five games without a win.

The home side were three goals behind after 51 minutes courtesy of Ciaran Clark, Frederico Fernandez and Jonjo Shelvey all netting for the away team.

All teams go through tough patches and we are in one at the minute. We've got to put that right and start again on Monday.

While Fabian Balbuena and Robert Snodgrass were able to respond for West Ham in the second period, Cresswell acknowledged that the performance simply was not good enough, particularly defending from set-pieces, with all three of Newcastle's goals coming from set plays.

"I think the way we started, from our point of view, just wasn't good enough," the No3 said. "Credit to Newcastle, they did well in the first half. But we can't go 3-0 down and then look for a reaction. We were chasing the game at 3-0.

"The last 15 minutes or so was ours with Newcastle dropping deep. All teams go through tough patches and we are in one at the minute. We've got to put that right and start again on Monday.

"It's not good enough. We spoke about set-pieces before the game and yet, to concede them, wasn't good enough. We need to go through it. We're going through a bad period and we need to stick together."

With a trip away to Burnley next weekend before the international break, Cresswell is looking for the team to be fighting for every ball from the first whistle at Turf Moor, and is anticipating a hard-working week on the training pitches at Rush Green prior to next weekend.

He added: "We've got to be at it from the off and be on the front foot. From our point of view, it wasn't good enough. We need to put it right, have a good week and look forward to the next game."
