Loan Watch: Neufville debuts in Newport FA Cup shock

Vashon Neufville

Vashon Neufville enjoyed a dream debut for Newport County as the Exiles upset Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup third round.

The West Ham United left-back joined the EFL League Two club on Friday and went straight into Michael Flynn’s squad for Sunday’s tie at Rodney Parade.

And, after impressing alongside teammates he had trained alongside just once, Neufville won the match-winning penalty when his late cross was handled by Premier League title winner Marc Albrighton.

Padraig Amond stepped up and converted the 85th-minute spot-kick to send the Welsh club through to the fourth round.

The result was the first time Newport had beaten top-flight opposition in the FA Cup since overcoming Sheffield Wednesday in 1964 – the same year the Hammers lifted the trophy for the first time.

Elsewhere in the Emirates FA Cup, Marcus Browne played the full 90 minutes for Oxford United, but the League One club were edged out 1-0 at Championship Brentford courtesy of Neal Maupay’s late penalty.

Jordan Hugill was not involved as Middlesbrough beat Peterborough United 5-0.

Josh Cullen is on his way back from a dislocated shoulder, so he missed Charlton Athletic’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland in League One.

Toni Martinez’s Rajo Majadahonda are at home to Las Palmas in Spain’s Segunda Division on Monday evening. Sead Haksabanovic was not involved as Malaga lost 3-0 at home to Reus in the same competition on Sunday.

Martin Samuelsen (VVV-Venlo) and Edimilson Fernandes (Fiorentina) are on their respective Dutch and Italian winter breaks.
