On This Day: Zamora shoots Hammers to the top of the Premier League

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold....

Newly-promoted West Ham United had enjoyed a fine 2005/06 season, finishing ninth in the Premier League and reaching the FA Cup final.

And the wave of optimism sweeping through Alan Pardew's side continued with a 3-1 opening-day win over Charlton Athletic at the Boleyn Ground.

Three days later, exactly 13 years ago today, the Hammers went top of the table after drawing 1-1 at Watford, where Bobby Zamora's goal cancelled out Marlon King's opener.

The remainder of the 2006/07 campaign did not go quite so well for Pardew, who departed in December following a horrendous run of form, but for one day in August, he had guided the Irons to the pinnacle of English football!
