  • Knoyle hopes his side can beat Brighton later this season at the fourth time of asking

Kyle Knoyle admitted West Ham United’s inability to be clinical in front of goal let them down on Monday night as the Premier League 2 side were beaten 3-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls recorded their second win over the east Londoners this season, having beaten them in the Premier League Cup in early December.

Aaron Connolly notched either side of an unfortunate Declan Rice own goal at the Amex Elite Performance Centre to give the hosts all three points, despite the fact that the Hammers were on top in terms of both shots on goal and possession.

After the disappointing defeat, full-back Knoyle was left to reflect on what was a disappointing evening for Terry Westley’s outfit.

He said: “It was very frustrating for us. We had the majority of the possession throughout and we created a lot of chances but they were more clinical than us.

“I think the fact that we had more shots makes it more frustrating for us. At the end of the day, we’ve conceded three goals and have lost the game.

“We need to look at the mistakes we made for the goals, we need to clean up those errors and then with the goals we need to be more clinical in front of goal.”

“We have got one more chance to beat Brighton now this season. We will go back and watch the game and hopefully take the things we learn into the next game against them and come in with a different approach and try and win the game.”

Knoyle has enjoyed a recent spell back at right-back in the U23 side, having been on loan at Wigan Athletic for the first half of the season.

The 20-year-old, who impressed on loan at Scottish side Dundee United last term, struggled with injuries at the DW Stadium but is looking to kick on once his fitness improves.

“It’s great for me to get back on the pitch playing football,” he continued. “I played a few U23s games at Wigan but it’s not the same intensity in the games as here, so I came back and I really need to just keep playing 90 minutes.

“Hopefully then before the end of the window the aim for me now is to get back on loan and push on throughout the season.”
